What an Overhaul May Include

The scope depends on the equipment and its condition. A typical project may begin with incoming documentation and photographs, followed by controlled disassembly and cleaning. Components are inspected for wear, cracking, deformation, corrosion, damaged fits and previous repairs.

Reusable parts can be measured against available drawings or functional requirements. Worn components may be replaced from existing references, manufactured from drawings or reverse engineered when documentation is missing. Bearings, bushings, pins, rollers, seals, guides, fasteners and other wear items may be included when relevant to the assembly.

After repair and replacement, the assembly is checked according to the agreed scope. Testing may be limited to bench movement or dimensional verification when full operating conditions are only available on the customer’s machine.

Define the Scope Before the Shutdown

Overhaul projects are most predictable when equipment identification, known symptoms, spare availability and shutdown timing are reviewed early. Photographs and maintenance history can help estimate the work, but hidden damage may only become visible after disassembly.

For this reason, the quotation or work plan should distinguish the expected scope from additional findings. The customer and UM can then agree how unexpected damage, unavailable parts or engineering changes will be handled.

Preparing an Assembly for Overhaul

Provide the machine model, serial number, assembly name, operating symptoms and desired completion window. Identify any critical dimensions, settings or orientation marks that must be preserved. Include drawings, manuals and previous repair records where available.

UM can also evaluate whether a machine audit, 3D scan or reverse-engineering step should occur before or during the overhaul to improve documentation and future spare-part planning.
