3D Scanning Services for Industrial Parts and Equipment

UM provides industrial 3D scanning services to capture the surface geometry of parts, assemblies and equipment. The resulting digital data can support reverse engineering, inspection, fit analysis, documentation and the creation of CAD models for manufacturing or maintenance projects.

When 3D Scanning Is Useful

3D scanning is well suited to components with complex curves, freeform surfaces, cast or molded geometry and large numbers of features that would be slow to capture manually. It can also document an installed area, compare a worn part with a reference model or record equipment before modification.

Common applications include housings, castings, molded packaging parts, change parts, tooling surfaces, ducts, frames and components with irregular profiles and any part you may need to replicate really. The suitability of the method depends on object size, surface condition, required accuracy and access.

Reflective, transparent, very dark or obstructed surfaces may require preparation or a different measurement approach.

From Scan Data to Usable CAD

A scan typically produces a point cloud or polygon mesh that represents the measured surface. That file is not automatically a production-ready CAD model. Depending on the project, UM may clean and align the data, create reference sections, compare it with nominal geometry or build a parametric CAD model.

Critical dimensions, holes, threads, fits and tolerances still need conventional measurement. Material, heat treatment and surface finish are also outside the scan data and must be specified separately.

Preparing a Scanning Project

Provide the part or equipment size, photographs, access conditions and the intended use of the data. Explain whether the goal is visualization, inspection, replacement-part design, modification or fit verification.

The required deliverable should also be defined, such as raw scan data, an aligned mesh, inspection comparison or CAD model. This ensures the scanning method and level of post-processing match the actual project need.

What file does a 3D scanner create?

Can 3D scanning capture every feature of a part?

Not always. Hidden surfaces, deep internal features, reflective areas and obstructed geometry may be difficult to capture. Threads, bores and precision fits may require conventional measurement, disassembly or additional scanning positions. Disassembly or multiple scan positions may be required to reduce hidden areas.

Is a 3D scan accurate enough to manufacture a part?

It can be an important input, but manufacturing usually requires engineering interpretation, datums, tolerances, material and surface specifications. Accuracy depends on the scanner, object size, surface, setup and required feature. Critical dimensions should be verified separately. Production drawings and inspection criteria must still be created or confirmed.
